Abstract

Majorana fermion is of common interest in both particle and condensed matter physics. In particle physics the Majorana neutrino is an indication of lepton number violation and hence matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe while it is treasured as Angel Particle in condensed matter. However, Majorana fermion always seems not as transparent as Dirac fermion. For example, contrary to the naive expectation that Majorana neutrino is its own antiparticle, neutrino is different from anti-neutrino even if they are Majorana fermions. This lecture will try to clarify these fundamental issues and introduce the rich phenomenological consequences.

This is an informal and pedagogical lecture/seminar on the Majorana fermion, especially the Majorana neutrinos, and with some spontaneous comment/input from the condensed matter faculties. The first lecture on May/26 would setup the definition of Majorana fermions with minimal requirement on prior knowledge of quantum mechanics and special relativity while the second lecture on June/2 introduces the phenomenological consequences of Majorana neutrinos. Anybody interested are welcome to join.
