In this talk, I will discuss what makes HEFT different from SMEFT. Focusing on the scalar sector, I will present a set of geometric criteria that can distinguish the two EFTs. We further investigate what type of UV theories will result in HEFT instead of SMEFT. Concrete matching examples will be discussed, where HEFT is generated upon integrating out UV physics.
